During the lab we talked about the difference between weather and climate. We also revisited the Iowa goldfinch discussion from the week before and talked about the driving question of how we know the birds in danger. In groups each person read an article and then we came together to talk about what we learned. During the time we also looked at different graphs and charts that focused on things like hot / cold days and precipitation. We also talked about how climate has changed habitats within the United states.  During discussion we talked about how some people don't believe in climate change or that humans play a part in climate change. We also talked about different predictions made about global warming from the past. We also looked at how climate change affects sea levels, sea ice, and the temp of the water.  What did you learn? I knew about greenhouse gasses but the chapter helped me learn about the different types of gasses that are included.  What was most ...

During the lab we began talking about climate change. We had to watch the movie before the flood which talked about different aspects of climate change and reasons behind why humans are affecting the climate. As groups we researched different ways climate change has affected the Iowa goldfinch. Each group looked at different areas of Iowa and what's affecting the population of goldfinches in that area. We learned about how temperature, weather, and precipitation play a role in the birds' lives. During discussion we had a quiz.    What did you learn? I learned about the definitions of climate and weather and how they are different.   What was most helpful? The acronym L.O.W.E.R since it broke down the factors of how different areas are cooler or hotter.  What do you need more information on? How can we (personally) help lessons or slow down the effects of climate change. What questions/concerns/comments do you have? Can humans make a change that can have an actua...

During the lab we talked about how layers of rock are different ages and how the top layers are younger. We began talking about different types of erosion like wind, water, and glacier. Then we looked at many different types of sand through a telescope. As groups we had to determine whether the sand was created from wind, water, or glacier erosion.    During the discussion this week we talked about buoyancy and did an experiment on whether or not canned sodas will sink or float on water. We then began talking about Archimedes' principle. We read a book about how this principle came about. Then we did an experiment to find out whether a gold crown is full gold or had added fillers. We also talked about how this principle can be used with geo. Some students also got to cut a geo in half.  What did you learn? I learned that geo’s can be created from air, water vapor,  and carbon dioxide bubbles  from within a rock.  What was most helpful? The video abou...
